mysql problem

when i try to connect to my mysql, terminal gives me this error:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql .sock' (111)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' ex ists!

i checked in the /var/lib/mysql/ directory and realized that mysql.sock dosnt exist but in the handbook "redhat linux 8 unleashed" it said that mysql.sock should be in that dir.anyone know why this is happening?

how are you trying to log in? Did you create a password for root? If so type:

mysql -u root -p <enter>

You will then be prompted for a password.

First of all check that mysqld is up and running by doing a ps auxw | grep mysqld if so, the mysql socket should exists in for instance /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock ... if not the socket path has been changed, etc. In that case check /etc/my.cnf
