My linux locks up all the time.

K well, this has been happening with all my distros, mandrake, redhat, knoppix, slackware, and so on. I will be on my computer, for either 25 minutes, or 2 days, then.. it locks up. Its not a lock up where I can kill my xserver, its a hard lock up, where I have to restart my computer. I have had this problem on 4 computers so far. I have not found a way to stop it. The only distro so far that had very little problems with lock ups, was slackware, but they were lock ups. Where can I find out why my computer will lock up? Isn't they some var.log that I look at, when I restart my computer to find out? I know its not my hardware. My CPU is running around 90-100 degrees now, and my mobo is even less. It seems a day goes by without a lock up. Im going fuking nuts.

Your cpu is not ment to be run at 90 - 100 degrees. (Some motherboards cut out at 80 degress(cpu)).
Install a case fan or a better cpu fan.

Initially I would tend to suspect memory problems. Any way you could test it? Maybe look into downloading MemTest86 or something similar.

But you say you've had this *same* problem across different distros on MULTIPLE computers? If that's so, then what is it that's similar in each instance? I would have guessed the computer itself, but if you're experiencing this with different hardware each time... I dunno.

Can you give some more details about the specifics? What computers? Which distros ON which computers? Are you swapping hardware out from one computer and placing it in another?

It just doesn't make too much sense to be experiencing the same problem across multiple hardware AND software platforms. The only thing similar in that case could possibly be location, power source, and internet connectivity.

I'd like a bit more to go on... :/

Computers... 2 AMD's and 2 Intels. From Athlon 2000+, 2500+, to Celeron 2.0G. From 128 megs of 2100 ram, to 256 of 2100 ram, 512 megs of 512 ram, 4 different hard drives. 16 gig, 8 gigs, 80 gigs, ranging from 5400 (lowest speed) to 7200rpm. Logitect mouse, to cheap brand mouse. Internet, or no internet. Games or no games. I did memtest for 60 hours on my newest build, but it came back with no errors. I used to have over 140 degrees on my AMD build, but I sprayed it out with the can of air. (and no, it wasn't white when it came out) Sprayed the graphics card as well. I also have a laptop, with a p3, and it just bombs out, whenver it feels the time is right to fuk up my day. There has been too many problems with computers in the short time I have used them, I'll pick it up in about 12 years. Fuk this. But you know what? Thanx for the help I get from this place.

Yeah, I'd agree, are we talking Celcius or Farenheit? It makes a big difference. If its 100 degrees Farenheit, hell, what's your secret in keeping your system cool..

well.... for max. cpu-temperature look here:

http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Art...eratures.shtml

and as the AMD-build pc runs at 140 degrees ( see post #5 )
then ( as trickykid said ) either the best coolers ever are used or no coolers at all.

but...afaik. , an overheated cpu will cause a reboot and not a freeze.

maybe try, if freezing occurs, to login by ssh to look if it really " died " or the graphics just hangs.
