My LAMP server (on a laptop) runs very slooow

Hi.

On a laptop --working as a LAMP Server with Fedora Core 2-- I'm suffering very
slow proccesses when accesing webpages.

RAM Memory: 256 Mb
Processor: Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor - M 1400 MHz

Making 'top':
-----------------------------------
top - 12:25:01 up 3:22, 5 users, load average: 0.72, 0.86, 0.76
Tasks: 92 total, 2 running, 90 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 15.8% us, 12.3% sy, 0.0% ni, 70.2% id, 0.0% wa, 1.8% hi, 0.0% si
Mem: 257056k total, 249752k used, 7304k free, 15576k buffers
Swap: 512024k total, 44932k used, 467092k free, 70964k cached
-------------------------------

It's an average view: When accessing web pages, %CPU usage raises to 90%,
but Memory free is 5000-6000 Kb on average.

I'm considering increasing RAM Memory up to 512 Mb, but I would like to know
other opinions. Thank you very much.

My first question would be, why are you running a LAMP server on a laptop? Do you have X running with other applications while your LAMP server is running? My guess would be yes since your swap is being heavily used, etc from the output you provided.

That'd probably help a lot. 256MB is a little bit small, especially if your running X and (worse yet) memory hogs like KDE and GNOME.

I have a similar Fedora Core 3 system (256MB Ram, 1.6GHz Duron) that I run a full set of LAMP applications on. It runs fine but I only use it for my own tinkering, so it guess it depends on how much of a load you're putting on it.
