I'm pretty new to Linux and have been kinda confused by the term "multi user system". Does that mean that I can have multiple X sessions running simultaneously? For example could I have my log-in on tty6, with my favorite window manager and my friend can have tty7 for his using his favorite window manager, at the same time. So that all IU have to do is CTL+ALT+6 and he does CNTL+ALT+7?
I've tried it and I get error messages saying that X is already running so maybe i'm misunderstanding something...
Also, when I log into the system with whatever account then leave X and try to log into another account adn "startx" I get an error message saying that startx: command not found. I know i've got to be doing something wrong there.
BTW: i'm running Slackware 10.0
EDIT: I think I found out my answer to multiple X sessions...but the other question above is still valid..
its multi-user in the sense that mutliple users can log into the system at the same time. This is done by telnet, ssh, local logins. I had never thought of trying the 'X window' idea you spoke of, but it looks as if it wouldn't work.
You were sort of on the right track with the tty's, you just added the complexity of running X window for each user.
I was able to find a lot of resources for multiple X sessions by googling "multiple X sessions" some of the results led back to here (oops ) . I've gotten it to work and it's workin out well. What do you think about the login problem?
yes, if for some strange reason the directory containing "startx" and the rest of a X distribution programs, then it should be added if you want to use "startx" , without it you'll type "/path/to/directory/startx"
