Multiple Problems with Desktop Effects/Beryl in Ubuntu 7.04 (Radeon x1300 pro)
First of all, I'm not exactly sure where to put this, so I hope I chose the right place.
*EDIT* I reinstalled Ubuntu 7.04, so my errors have changed, as well as the contents of this post. Now the only problem I have is:
When I try Beryl/desktop effects, my screen would just go white.
I've searched for fixes & solutions for hours with no success, mostly because I can't find someone who has the exact problem as me (and the same video card), so the main reason I came here, is so I can get a step by step solution, that works for my specific situation.
Any advice on what to do?
P.S. the word "main" is spelled wrong on the Linux - Newbie Forum definition

Hey vonfeldt7 don't worry about that user, its been reported.
What are the Beryl components you got installed? Here's mine
Code:
$ yum list installed | grep beryl
beryl.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
beryl-core.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
beryl-gnome.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
beryl-kde.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
beryl-manager.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
beryl-plugins.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
beryl-settings.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
beryl-settings-simple.x86_64 0.2.1-1.fc7 installed
Can you post the link to the tutorial you followed?
What does 'glxinfo | grep direct' return in terminal? It should be 'YES' if 3D is enabled.
Also post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Not sure about Ubuntu, but someone here will hopefully reply with some suggestions.

^^ i thought it would be easier to just get a fresh install of linux, so Now the only problem I have is the white screen, sorry if this has caused any confusion. (so do you still want me to try what you said above?)
I tried installing drivers from here but when I try to open it, it says "Could not open the file /home/vonfeldt7/desktop/...ler-8.38.6-x86.x86_64.run" it then says that "gedit has not been able to detect the character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character coding from the menu and try again."

Don't open it with gedit, you need to run that file.
As per that site,
Quote:
To install the ATI Proprietary Linux driver using the Automatic option, follow these steps:
1. Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the ATI Proprietary Linux driver download.
2. Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.38.6.run to launch the ATI Proprietary Linux driver installer. The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed.

NOTE: You should be root while doing this.

Okay, I figured out how to run it, but how do I run it as root (super user)?
*edit*
nevermind, I got it, now do I need to configure it or anything? And I try to enable desktop effects, and it says "Desktop effects could not be enabled"
