Multiple Issues in Mandrake 10.1 Community...where to check?

Hi all. This past weekend, I had some power issues which resulted in an ungraceful shutdown of my linux box. Since then, I've been having multiple issues with the machine that it's driving me crazy because I don't know where to check to see if I can find a problem. I'll describe some of the issues below.

Azureus will take 4-5 attempts to start up. Most of the time, it gets to loading plugins and the splash screen will go away and won't open. Other times, I'll get it started and running and then sometime later it will just randomnly disappear.

Right now, I can't lock my screen. The screen savers won't run.

I've intermittently had issues with Firefox opening and running fine.

I've had a ton of complete lockups. To the point where I can't even SSH into the box from a different machine because the network connection is killed.

On reboots, I've had it run a disk check and it finds some erros and I allow them to be fixed. One time last night, after it checked and fixed errors, it booted to command prompt in read-only mode. Hadn't ever seen that before.

Right now, it's running semi-stable, but I don't trust it. I'm trying to move ALL data off it, but it's slow going. Unless I can get this machine back to the point where I can trust its stability, I'm going to install a different or updated distro. I should probably do that anyway, but I'm not one of those people that need the latest and greatest. I just want something that runs smoothly.

Anyway, my main questions is: Where can I check to find what's going on and what exactly would I be looking for? And I hope it's not a going bad hard drive. I hope it's software related.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can always look in /var/log/messages to see if there are some errors reported. About the comp freezing you can try "top" in command line to see if one app is consuming too much resources. And last about firefox and azureus, I have no special clue, but I would start them from command line so errors would be reported there and might give you an idea what's wrong with them.
