MSI Geforce 4 4200 driver problem

I have just installed a new videocard and ofcoure the was no generic geforce 4 driver for my mandrake 8.2 so it started acting up when i booted. No problem, I though I will just swinge by Nvidia's site and download a couple of rpms which I did. The then "bad thing" happend. Something went wrong with the install and now when i boot I get the message: "libXi.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" and as if that was not bad enough I also get the message "INIT: Id "X" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes". Furtermore, i cannot shutdown the computer with "shutdown -t sec now". I have tried to remove the rpms but then I just get a very long list of errors.

I hope someone can help me with my dilemma

maybe reading these 2 gives a clue

what rpm's did you install? more stable results rebuilding from src.rpm (or install/compile the tarballs)

for AMD processor; try mem=nopentium in lilo.conf after append, rerun lilo
On my mdk 8.2 box i use the exact path for load "glx'
load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so"

and read this for nvidia on mandrake
www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/hardware/hgforce.html
don't know if it will cure your shutdown problem, why not boot
into runlevel 3 and do a shutdown just to see if its X related
good luck
