MP3 support in CentOS 5
 
Hi, I am tushar I have just started to learn the Linux I have installed Centos5 on my pc. I have tried to play MP3 through sound and video programmes but could not run. I have downloaded xmms but I don't know how to installed it.

I advise you to read the 'installation' instructions on the XMMS site. Please do a bit of reading before posting anything. Please consider. If you still have sny problems, post them here.

Also, the installation method depends on the type of package (source/binary file(s)). Please read.

Also, please read the LQ guidelines on how to write the topic/subject. Writing 'Help me' discourages some to actually read it.

As for your issue, CentOS is just a clone of Red Hat which does not ship or have the necessary codecs to support MP3 playback. You need to download the proper codecs along with installing XMMS or any other media player you choose.

One option you have is to add the rpmforge yum repository and then install the gstreamer-bad and gstreamer ugly packages using yum. Post back if you need more help with this.
