Movie Player

Anyone know a nice movie player? I want to play some avi/dvd movie but can't find a working progz.

Xmps work until I try to play something.... Then it close.

mplayer is too buggy for me. I can't load a GUI and it show me stupid errors.

If someone knows another movie player please tell me

mplayer is NOT buggy!! the GUI is experimental... but WHY do you need a gui just to watch a film?? it starts, you make it full screen, you watch.. no farting around with silly buttons and all that junk. MPLayer is by far the fastest and most versatile media player around, and if you're having problems with it, you should read through the docs a bit better.

Try xine, never compiled it myself but the rpm's work fine. Mplayer is better though ( but not a lot ).
The gui for mplayer never works because the filepermissions are screwed up when you just thow it in there - nothing about that in the doc's.

Yeah, getting mplayer to work with a GUI is definitely an issue of file permissions. I struggled with that for a while as well.

Just make sure the user has permission to read the Skins directories...

I run xine with mandrake 8.1. down loaded rpm's from their main site and have had no

problems playing dvd, avi. mpeg., asf & wmv files. I have not tried vod yet. Here's the

link to site for rpm's you need:

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br...9.8/i686.RPMs/

Just make sure you read to see to see which rpm you need for the for the features you want. I used rpm manager to install the rpm's. Hope this helps.

If you need the main site link here it is: http://xine.sourceforge.net/

I'll throw in another vote for mplayer and point out that it really does help if you read the manual before compiling it. My new version (in theory, I haven't tested it yet) now supports my front and back speakers seperately so I can have surround sound when watching DVDs.

I am also looking for a wmv player. Xine on my Mandrake 8.2 box does not play them any ideas?

Ben.

well wmv is a M$ closed source format, you aren't gonna get good support for it in *nix

Sure you are. MPlayer does them too. Download the codecs, unzip them into the directory specified by MPlayer BEFORE compilation and then compile it. I've got quite a few .wmv's that run absolutely flawless. MPlayer is just the best hands down!!
