Mouse only functions (somewhat) horizontally

Hi. I'm brute-force teaching myself linux (bashing my head against any problems I'm having until I figure it out) but I'm kind of lost. I have two mice connected to my box. A Logitech Marble Mouse USB (it's a two button trackball) and a Logitech optical wheelmouse, also USB. They're connected to a USB hub (belkin 4-port) and then into my PC. They function in the xwindows environment, but the cursors appear to be drawn to the upper left side of the screen. I can make them move horizontally and occasionally vertically, but they're always rapidly pulled back to the upper left hand corner. Makes it a bit difficult to go into xf86cfg and twiddle with the settings until I figure out what's causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

You can switch out of X and edit the file in text mode, using a CLI text editor.

Then from there, if you have questions, post us your XF86Config (or XF86Config-4)

What distro you running, and did you build the kernel or is this the one that came with your distro?

Cool

I know what it is because I had the same problem. Go and edit your XFree86Config file and where it says option protocol or whatever make sure it is says "auto".

That was it. Switching the Option "Protocol" to auto fixed it. Thanks guys.
