mouse goes crazy in 2.6.13

I installed 2.6.13(slack 10.2) on a system consisting of an old PIII x1000
(with 2GB RAM)

Everything is ok, I installed test26.s and then
the modules,
pkginstall kernel-modules-2.6.13-i486-1.tgz and source(I do not need alsa and sound)

everythingworks except the mouse.
The mouse is an MS Intellimouse PS/2 compatible
which goes crazy on X. I mean it selects drop-down or direct menus without my clicking, and does not follow my motion.

I have tried pretty much all I can thing of:
with xorg.conf

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"

# On platforms where PnP mouse detection is supported the following
# protocol setting can be used when using a newer PnP mouse:

# Option "Protocol" "Auto"

# The available mouse protocols types that you can set below are:
# Auto BusMouse GlidePoint GlidePointPS/2 IntelliMouse IMPS/2
# Logitech Microsoft MMHitTab MMSeries Mouseman MouseManPlusPS/2
# MouseSystems NetMousePS/2 NetScrollPS/2 OSMouse PS/2 SysMouse
# ThinkingMouse ThinkingMousePS/2 Xqueue
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
#(also tried imps2, IMPS/2-is there a difference?-), no luck

# The mouse device. The device is normally set to /dev/mouse,
# which is usually a symbolic link to the real device.

Now I tried both

Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

#[ I have seen working Fedora core 2.6.13 systems with /dev/input/mice
# for a PS/2 mouse...]

and
# Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" ( alink to psaux)
# Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"

I also tried ZAxisMapping "4 5", nothing

in gpm I had set this as imps2, but even with gpm -k no luck

root@quality5:~# ls -l /dev/input/m*
......
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2005-11-15 17:01 /dev/mouse -> psaux

Since this is a rather slow processor, I asked KDE to limit the fancy effects that require a fast processor

I also checked the mouse settings:
Right handed, single click to open, change pointer shape, visual feedback on activation,
pointer acceleration: 2x
threshold 4pixels
double click 400ms
drag start 500 ms, 4pixels
mouse wheel scrol 3

Any ideas? The exact same mouse works on SUSE 9.3 (2.6.11)
and all other machines!
