When you boot from Knoppix, /dev/root is actually a file on the CD, so when it says that /dev/root is mounted on /, it means that a very large file on the disc is mounted as /. If you want to listen to mp3s and the like, then you firstly need to know which partition they are stored on. To get a list of partitions, issue to command fdisk -l (that is a lower-case L). Make a directory where you're going to mount the partition, and then mount it with mount -t filesystem /dev/partition /mountpoiint where filesystem is vfat/ext2/whatever, partition is what you just found out and mountpoint is the directory you just created. Be aware that when you reboot your computer, these will not be preserved and so when you next boot into Knoppix, you'll have to do the same again.
