mount freeze

whenever I do certain mount operations like mount -o loop something
the mount process freezes up, and I can not kill it, even with kill -9
when I reboot the shutdown process freezes to. so I have to cut the power.

if I do ps -aux it says under STAT: DL, the man page says:
D uninterruptible sleep (usually IO)
L has pages locked into memory (for real-time and custom IO)

why is it freezing? and how do I kill mount?
please help.
