MORE sound problems... help!

Hi,

I use XMMS to play mp3's and when using the ratpoison WM it works perfectly however it won't work under KDE!

If I try to play MP3's in KDE it comes up with the Check sound card, check drivers, check devices warning.

I don't get it, any help would be much apreciated because even though I use ratpoison most of the time KDE comes in useful.

Thanks.

Sounds like a problem with ARTSd, the KDE sound server. I believe disabling that (in your KDE control center, under Sound, uncheck "Start Arts on KDE startup") will do the trick

I'll give it a go and get back to you, I'm not on my linux box at the moment.

What's the deal with ARTSd anyway? What's wrong with KDE using good old OSS or ALSA.

An ya know, just whatever floats their boat at the time Everyone wants to make something better (a good thing!) sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Plus, a lot of people like Artsd, it works great in some situations, and for some people. You might even be able to get it to work for you, but for now, you are probably best of disabling it and just working on it later.

OSS and ALSA are drivers for the soundcard, not sound servers. ESD (the Esound daemon) and ArtsD are sound servers. They queue up the sound, ensure certain devices have access to the sound device, and so on. Different than a driver

Cool

Ah, So I need either ESD or ARTSd running?

I guess the standard is ESD and that's what ratpoison is using?

I hav two gaps in my tecchie knowledge and they are drivers and how the internet works, so pardon my ignorance.

That's ok, my knowledge is more like swiss cheese, it's solid, but so damn holy that you really only get half the block!

Ok, so now where was I, cheese got me all hungry...

Nah, you don't need either AFAIK. Here's a glance at my ps:

As you can see, I have no sound server running, yet XMMS plays just fine, as well as many other sounds (video etc..).

ESD and ARtsD isn't necessary, it's rather a feature than a requirement.

HTH

It works now I stoped ARTS, the only thing that seems to be different without arts as opposed to having it running is when I ffwd MP3's using my remote it seems more 'chopy' but that's all.

Also I think I know what broke it in the first place, mpg123!!

XMMS first stoped working when I tried mpg123 out and even now when I play a teach using it it only plays the first 1/2 second then stops. It takes a reboot to get sound working again for any application.

Thanks.
