Sounds like a problem with ARTSd, the KDE sound server. I believe disabling that (in your KDE control center, under Sound, uncheck "Start Arts on KDE startup") will do the trick
An ya know, just whatever floats their boat at the time Everyone wants to make something better (a good thing!) sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Plus, a lot of people like Artsd, it works great in some situations, and for some people. You might even be able to get it to work for you, but for now, you are probably best of disabling it and just working on it later.
OSS and ALSA are drivers for the soundcard, not sound servers. ESD (the Esound daemon) and ArtsD are sound servers. They queue up the sound, ensure certain devices have access to the sound device, and so on. Different than a driver
It works now I stoped ARTS, the only thing that seems to be different without arts as opposed to having it running is when I ffwd MP3's using my remote it seems more 'chopy' but that's all.
Also I think I know what broke it in the first place, mpg123!!
XMMS first stoped working when I tried mpg123 out and even now when I play a teach using it it only plays the first 1/2 second then stops. It takes a reboot to get sound working again for any application.
