I have just received a machine that I need to run some apps on. When I issue the startx command after login my monitor turns blank with some screwy lines at the top...

I believt that the monitor settings may be incorrect but am not sure how to change them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me you need to reconfigure X. Make sure your getting and setting the correct specs, something wrong can destroy your monitor.
