I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my second hard drive. I had a C: drive go bad which had Winddow's XP installed on it. I replaced the C: crive and obviously Windows wiped "Grub 2" out of existence. Now, the problem is, I wanted to boot with my original live "Karmic CD" to reinstall and repair the "Grub2" so I can get to my original installation of Karmic on my second hard drive. What happens is that when I start the CD, it runs all the way up to it's time to Start X then the monitor shuts down. The CD is obviously still running in the backround as I'm able to press the contol F3 key and get to bash. I tried typing in sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and I come up with the message "(gedit:3399) Gtk-Warning** cannot open dislay". Not sure what is going on. I have a ATI Radeon 96oo all-in-wonder card. Thanks in advance for any help on this!
There is no rescue option on the live CD. I went ahead and let the CD load and went to terminal. I found my boot on /dev/sdb1. When I went to mount/dev/sdb1, I keep getting "Mount; Can't find /dev/sdb1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab. However, when I enter fdisk -l, I see all my drives!

You can't use gedit if you are in a text terminal. Try nano /path/to/file next time.

You need to provide mount with more information (because you are running from CD, the fstab is not the one on your HDD)
Try this to reinstall grub (that win hosed):
Boot from the karmic CD.
Get to a bash prompt. Become root, and reinstall grub2 (because that's what karmic uses):
Not doing too well here. I still can't carry on with a video display. The same exact thing happens. When I tried to install Grub2 once at bash, I got the message "Aut-detectio of a filesystem module failed". Just to try something different, at the initial startup screen, I choose "Install Ubuntu". Still only went so far, then once again the monitor screen going black. One thing that may be worth mentioning is that I tried to boot another "Linux live cd", and it came up fine. Monitor dispay everything worked ok. Makes me wonder what is up with the Ubuntu Karmic CD. I even burnt another one and it failed. Is there a way I can run Vesa? Maby that would help. Help!!

The latest update on this mess is as follows: I did manage to get grub2 back and went to load my old installation of Ubuntu Karmic. Same deal, monitor would shut off and it still would be running in the backround. So, what I did next is this. I installed (with alternative install disk) The beta2 of 10.4. I did this so I could maby see the files on the old Karmic installation and maby transfer them over. Well, I went to Disk Manager and loaded it and just the window appeared but no drives! So I really can't see any other drives on my computer. Unless I find a fix for this, I will uninstall the beta2 and reinstall 9.10 and maby transfer over the settings and files from the old installation. Thats where I am now.
