Monitor frequency and res blues

before selling my 19" monitor, i forgot to change my display resolution to 800x600 and monitor frequency to 60Hz in mandrake 9.
so, mandrake boots up fine save when it gets to the login screen and my (smaller) monitor tells me the signal is "out of sync". all i need to do is set the res and refresh rate to lower specs, but can't because i can't login!
i've tried fiddling in "rescue" mode... but no avail.
any ideas?

Use <Ctrl> <Alt> <F3> to go to command line mode. Login as root.
Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to fix your monitor settings.
