module problems after recompile

often times after i recompile my kernel, i get wierd messages about my modules at startup or when i try to modprobe them. this time, i dont see anything at startup, but i've just recompiled my wifi card's drivers and some ieee80211 stuff and when i try to modprobe the driver: "modprobe ipw2200", i get this:
WARNING: Error inserting ieee80211_crypt (/lib/modules/2.6.10/net/ieee80211/ieee80211_crypt.ko): Invalid module format
WARNING: Error inserting ieee80211 (/lib/modules/2.6.10/net/ieee80211/ieee80211.ko): Invalid module format
FATAL: Error inserting ipw2200 (/lib/modules/2.6.10/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200.ko): Invalid module format
i have no idea what this means or what's causing it. can anybody help me out? i usually just fix it by recompiling or reinstalling linux, but i'd like to know why it happens.

Modules are compiled for specific kernels. If you've recompiled your kernel and changed stuff in there, you need to recompile the ipw2200 modules as well otherwise you'll keep getting these errors when you try to load them.

in this case, you shouldn't just recompile the ipw2200 drivers, u should also recompile the ieee80211 subsystem from ... if you get errors compiling it, the following might help:

----- taken from somewhere else ------

the reason ieee80211 is failing to compile is either because the kernel version is prior 2.6.8, or most probably, gcc is using the wrong ieee80211.h file...

go to /usr/src/linux/include/net/
remove all files beginning with "ieee" and "original-ieee"

now ieee80211 and ipw2200 should compile correctly. dont forget to copy the firmware.

IMPORTANT: make sure u have the latest of all 3 packages:

IMPORTANT: check for any related patches on the websites (,

hope this solves ur problems!!
