modem works but no internet. ethernet ok

hello,

(Fedora 1)

this is a little strange. my modem was working fine and after i used the ethernet (to connect to the internet) i wasn't able to the use the modem no more. the modem responds and i am able to connect to the ISP fine but i cannot ping anything and my browser cannot browse anywhere.

what tests could i made to determine what is blocking me?

Hi Arpi

If you can't ping anything there could be something wrong with your ip or routing.

What is your ip when you check ifconig ethx (x is networkcard connected to modem)?

When you do route -n? What do you see then?

Whenever you want to access the internet, you will need to make sure that only one interface out of modem and ethernet is active. Otherwise, you may not be able to browse the net.

So before you dial in to your ISP, make sure that your interface eth0 (ethernet) is disabled. And similarly, before using LAN to browse the net, disable interface ppp0 (modem)...

amit

hello,

thanks for the answers. although i cannot test the modem connection right now, i think coolamit78 hit the nail. i'll try it on the weekend at home and see what happens (i can only use modem at home) right now i am using ethernet at the school. just in case, this is the info for hendrixbart (thanks!)

> /sbin/ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
inet addr:x.x.x.x Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:665 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:668 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:366295 (357.7 Kb) TX bytes:95207 (92.9 Kb)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0x8000 Memory:c0220000-c0240000

the modem is not connected to anetwork card

when i type rute -n i get:

Usage: route [-nNvee] [-FC] [<AF>] List kernel routing tables
route [-v] [-FC] {add|del|flush} ... Modify routing table for AF.

route {-h|--help} [<AF>] Detailed usage syntax for specified AF.
route {-V|--version} Display version/author and exit.

-v, --verbose be verbose
-n, --numeric don't resolve names
-e, --extend display other/more information
-F, --fib display Forwarding Information Base (default)
-C, --cache display routing cache instead of FIB

<AF>=Use '-A <af>' or '--<af>'; default: inet
List of possible address families (which support routing):
inet (DARPA Internet) inet6 (IPv6) ax25 (AMPR AX.25)
netrom (AMPR NET/ROM) ipx (Novell IPX) ddp (Appletalk DDP)
x25 (CCITT X.25)

but thanks for the tip. i think it is somethink like coolamit78 said.
