thanks for the answers. although i cannot test the modem connection right now, i think coolamit78 hit the nail. i'll try it on the weekend at home and see what happens (i can only use modem at home)
right now i am using ethernet at the school. just in case, this is the info for hendrixbart (thanks!)

the modem is not connected to anetwork card
when i type rute -n i get:
