modem for linux


Help!!, ive just installed mandrake linux...fine... (using gnome interface)my main partition is windows and i have an internal connexant modem....ive looked for drivers but no luck.....SO ....out came my old external 33000 modemwhich i understand should work fine.
Question....how do i set up the modem..ive tried everything but mandrake doesnt appear to detect it...any ideas????? thanks

external modems aren't hot-pluggable unless they're usb. the mandrake install program needs to be run with the modem attached before it can detect it.

what serial port are you trying to detect it with and what dialout program are you using, like kppp or redhat dialer? well an external modem connected should usually be com1 or com2... so you should try to query for it on ttyS0 or ttyS1 depending on how you have it connected? also if it still doesn't detect it, try using setserial command to manually tell its location. you shouldn't have to worry about an irq conflict since most serial ports are already assigned one.
