Modeline with VESA driver

I'm having all sorts of problems trying to get fglrx driver to work with a radeon hd 2100. The vesa driver works great. The only problem is that I need to set a custom modeline and the vesa driver seems to ignore them. Any ideas?

You mean perhaps "....custom modeline and the FGLRX driver seems to...."?
What does /var/log/Xorg.*.log" say?

Well I did manage to get the fglrx driver working but the modeline is being ignored.

my xorg.conf
Code:
# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Mmmmh, by the way I see in your log a lot of errors concerning DRM and DRI. Try eventually to follow this guide http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers about how to configure your kernel to work with those proprietary drivers.
Anyway I see in your xorg.conf that at the bottom, in the "Screen" section, you're not telling X which modelike you would like to use. I think that your "Screen"-section should look like this...
Code:
Section "Screen"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]"
	Device "aticonfig-Device[0]"
	Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
	DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
                Modes "640x480"
	EndSubSection
EndSection
And I think that you could omit the "modeline"-line, if you're using a modern monitor, as it will automatically get the valid modes from your graphics card and your monitor, therefore leaving you with only the need to configure the resolution in your "Screen"-section.

And by the way I think that the modeline should be written as "ModeLine". Not sure if it makes a difference.

This is the xorg.conf I am using for my notebook, which has a nVidia GPU:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "X.org Configured"
        Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
        InputDevice "TouchPad" "CorePointer"
        InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "BlankTime" "20"
EndSection

Section "Files"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"

        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
EndSection

My notebook runs with a resolution of 1680x1050.
Good luck!

As far as the xorg errors goes I'm a windows guy learning this stuff. I will check that guide out.

The bad thing is that when I add any mode to the xorg.conf the gdi goes into failsafe mode. I'm not sure why thats happening.

As far as the strange modeline goes, its to hook up to an arcade cgi monitor. It does work on another system. The one I'm trying to configure now has a different ati card and is giving me fits.

Your post made me learn how to read my xorg.log which helped a whole lot.

I resolved the issue by creating a custom fglxr install for debian. That did the trick. The standard install from ati didn't work.

Thanks
