Mod_ssl upgrade question

I'm trying to upgrade mod_ssl on three servers, two of which have apache 1.3.23 running and one that has 1.3.12. I know all the servers are out of date and I'm working on rebuilding the two later versions and phasing out the really old version but I need to buy some time. I upgraded openssl on all three servers and I need to get mod_ssl upgraded but I can't figure out how to install it. Is this something I'm going to need to recompile the entire apache install to do? Is mod_ssl included in the openssl source? I don't think it is but almost every howto I can find mentions installing both at the same time. Is there a good howto or guide out there to upgrading mod_ssl? I haven't been able to find one on Google. Any help would be appreciated.

Nick
