I don't remember (moderate dementia) if I've asked this question or not before. I'm changing over to Kbuntu. At present, I have an 78 gig (formatted) hd that has WIN 2k Pro on it. I still need it for some programs I have to run, but it's single booted.
Now, I have an IWill K266plus/35104A motherboard. It has an Award bios v. 6.00; Award PNP bios ext v. 1.0; AMD Athlon 1200 mhz CPU/a full gig of P-133 RAM. It does have a 3½" floppy and a Lite-On LTR-52327S CD Burner and a FX3210S CD player (for some reason doesn't read or play cd's).
I have a blank 37 gig (formatted) Western Digital hard drive that I'm going to load Kbuntu on from CD's that are being sent to me.
The question is:
Is it possible to add an external or internal 500 gig hard drive, so that I will be able to copy my legally-paid-for CD's and converted to MP3 format and also be able to download MP3's from legal pay-sites, pictures, and set up a database for all my ham radio contacts (QSO's) and various shortwave, longwave, and even scanner contacts? OR, will I have to buy another motherboard and RAM to get what I want? I'm on a limited, Social Security Disability income, so this option would have to wait until funds were available.
I had a recent crash of the computer and did manage to find, hidden in a file cabnet a legal additional working copy of my WIN 2k Pro software. I hid it so well, I almost never found it, LOL! I did have the ham spreadsheet and the scanner spreadsheets (Excel) on CD's so I'm good with that. The other pictures of friends, mountains, etc are lost in the crash. I know, I shoulda know better.
Well, for those of you who celebrate the holiday, Happy Turkey Day! Don't eat too much during the upcoming Holiday. I'm planing on a modest dinner, as I have more weight to lose, being a diabetic. So far since last New Year's, I've come from 308 pounds down to 240 pounds this morning on the scale and I'm trying to get to 175 again. My diabetes is much better in compliance and I've even had to cut back on the amount of insulin I take, so things are good.
I don't understand why you would need to buy a new motherboard. If you use an external USB drive, it should be a plug and play affair. I'm assuming you have USB support, since your motherboard looks similar to an old one of mine. If you don't have USB support (or if it's only USB1)you can get USB cards. Just make sure you can read and write from it on linux and windows and that the USB card works on linux. Kubuntu 7.10 should have NTFS write support I believe.
The IWill does have USB1 connections on both front and back. I'm not familiar with today's large hard drives specifications (over 80 gig) and all the other "abreviations". I'm not sure if I'll need a USB card so I can use the internal or external USB drive or can I use the IDE drive? That is why I asked about having to get another mobo.
I'm NOT looking for sympathy, with my disability. I'm doing well as I can and live each day to it's fullest. I'd just like to have a HUGE music "library" of most kinds of music....Classical, Opera, Bluegrass, OLD Country & Western, Honky Tonk, OLD Rock and Roll, Blues, Native American music, Big Band, Folk music, Western Swing, Military, Movie themes and soundtracks, Keltic, even some New Age and Space music, LOL!
I'd like to be able to take the music and put it with pictures of mountains, valley's, desert scenes, sunrises, sunsets, lakes, rivers, streams, woods, mountain cabin and log homes, pictures from Space..star clusters, gas clouds, galaxies, etc. Then, have it "change" every 30 seconds or so, like a "moving" screensaver. All of this would be for only me to view, so I wouldn't violate the "Mafia"...opps...Uhhh R.I.A.A.'s "rules of engagement", LOL!
Well, I'm "rattling on". I need to get ready for some Doctor's appointments this morning before they close for the Thanksgiving holiday's. Again, thanks for the help.
Blessings,
Respectfully,

King Ace 5 Lucky Queens & Jacks...my name is Don, Double Or Nothing, it goes with the poker hand, LOL!
If you have enough space and connectors for an ide drive, you could get that since you seem to only have USB 1. And an external drive on USB 1 would be slow. So unless you want to take your data with you... I'd say get an IDE drive. They're cheaper anyway.
