MMS Protocol - What is it??

Does anyone know if there is support for playing *.asf files from a website (normally played by windows media player)?? I am trying to achieve that using different players but it always complains: mms is not a registered protocol.
I have Fedora and Netscape 7.1 + Mozilla of course , several players - Realplayer, xine, vlc, mplayer ..
If anyone knows the answer - PLEASE post it .. Thanks!

I believe it stands for Microsoft Media Server and that is probably why its not working for you by default.

Here is how to set up the interface:

1. Download and install apt-get for your version of redhat from: http://apt.freshrpms.net. As the root (administrator) user, at the command prompt, type: apt-get update

2. Use apt to download mplayer: apt-get install mplayer (After this step, you no longer need to be the root user.)

3. Run the graphical version of mplayer: gmplayer

4. Right-click in the gmplayer window and select open URL. Then paste the link from the byu radio web site. Or run it all from the command line:

mplayer http://byuradio.org/streaming/byuradio.asx

Notes:

* MPlayer can also play quicktime sorenson movies and even handle realplayer streams.
* MPlayer works on all linux platforms. Non-redhat users should visit http://mplayerhq.hu for more information.
