Question mkfs and mounting large (1.4TB) hardware raid array.

I have a large hardware raid array that has 1.4TB or thereabouts, and i need to
make it into a linux format and then mount it to /dev/ras1.

so what i tried to do was:

mke2fs /dev/sda

which is seemed to do (it took a while) then the last message that came up was:

ext2fs_mkdir: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read
while creating root dir.

then went to prompt. When i tryed to mount it using:

mount /dev/sda /mnt/ras1

it then gives the standard message cant mount might be bad block or wrong type

Any ideas please?

i am now trying out ext3. i am sure i will have the same problems.

Do you get the same errors regardless of which filesystem you try and put on it?
