missing initrd

I'm woundering if a new "initrd.img" is automaticly created when you compile a new kernel? I've resently compiled the 2.6.9 kernel and I started to config grub when I relised I dont have an new initrd, so I cant get the new Debian system running. Have I missed some option when I compiled the kernel?

what are you using an initial ramdisk for??

Did you compile it the "debian way" using its packaging setup? If so after you set up your .config do make-kpkg --initrd --revision=custom.1 kernel_image.
