Hi All.,
My requirement is to develop a secondary boot disk(Alternative boot disk) for our server. For that which of the following method is preferable. Our version is Linux7.3(2.4.18-3)

1.Connect the Hard disk in another system and install the O.S and all required software
2.Connect it to the same system and do the mirroring.

for it to be a mirror image of the other drive you need to use raid

this requires you to change the drives partition to type raid, which I believe will cause all data to be distroyed on them.

You will need to backup the data and restore it after the raid array is up and running.

One thing you might try is to create a raid partition on the new drive and copy everything to it. Install the boot loader to it's mbr, then move it over to the primary and boot it. Then you could hotadd the other drive after partitioning it for raid.

You can do it with LINUX's software raid but it comes at a price of processor usage. Also the kernel has to be compiled for software RAID support. I suggest using hardware RAID for servers and workstations.
