Migration

Hi all, i have this linux based web and ftp server running on a 20 GB harddisk space, it is using up the disk space rapidly and i intend to migrate to another server. But before i know, i'm left with less than 5 GB of disk space which disallow me to backup all the /home data. Is there anyway to backup the data over to a network drive??? Or is there another solution to do so??? Help needed, thanks

Can you scp stuff off the server? If so, you can scp things off. There's a handy way of using SSH and tar to backup files, it goes as follows (working on the server whose files you want to back up:

tar -czf - <files/directories to back up> | ssh user@remosthost 'cat > backup.tgz'

This will create backup.tgz with your backup on the remote machine without having to create a tar file on the local machine first.

Hi, thanks for the reply. As told, i tried doing the backup, and i got this error message "bash: syntax error near unexpected token `|'" Erm......I'm quite new to this, what can i do to resolve this?

Can i increase the time that i can connect through SSH? Because my timeout is 120 seconds and i had to have some activities on the server in order to make the connection alive.
