I am migrating users and their files from an old box (rh 7 i think) to a new debian install but we have over 200 users and dont want to be calling each one to inform them their password have changed any ideas how to migrate the users/passwords over?

you should have no problems just copying across the encrypted password strings from/etc/shadow. You could use awk to pull out all entries from /etc/passwd with uid's in your user range, 500 to 1000 or whatever and get their equivalent shadow entries too. If this is a one off job though, manual cutting and pasting would be more appropriate. as long as you don't end up adding duplicate UID's you can get away with pasting those extra lines into the relevant files on the new systems. you shouls also be able to simply copy across the contents of /home/
