Microsoft shuts down access to some or all live service features to linux users
******Linux and hotmail..spread the word******** < inmiserysshadow > 11/21 15:31:42
Yes, of course microsoft will deny it, they have cut off linux users from using their hotmail accounts. Of course one would ask..why would you even have a hotmail account if you are a linux junkie? Simple. I had my hotmail account for 12 years now, well before I ever learned enough about linux to switch fully. Accounts I dont even remember having online are linked to that email..houndreds of them..and it is just well ingrained into my online presence. And how about all of the microsoft zombies we sit here and try to convert every day? guess who they use for email? (outlook ,etc...) Well, of course those microshit assholes can only do so much. The Good news is, AT THIS POINT, WE CAN GET PASSED WHAT THEY'VE DONE. A simple user agent spoof is all that is needed, and it is done quite simply open firefox and in the url bar type "about:config" without the quotes of course... Agree to the disclaimer and you will see a page of configuration options. ONLY edit the following: general.useragent.vendor CHANGE the value of this to - Windows general.useragent.vendorComment CHANGE the value of this to - Windows NT 6.0 general.useragent.vendorSub Change the value of this to - rv:1.9b5 Voila! Full access is restored! Now join in with me on my big F-U to Microshit by getting on all of the forums and pages you are a member of and passing this along!!!!!!!!!!! shadow@gccommunications.net http://rockford.craigslist.org/forums/?ID=108490806 This fix was tested using the latest firefox on ubuntu 8.10 |
That's hardly news; MS has been using the "user agent" string to deny services for many years now. One of the more famous cases was MS redirecting requests from a browser with "opera" in the user agent string to servers which had deliberately broken pages. So if you used Opera and visited MS pages, you got rubbish (well, ok, I concede you get rubbish regardless of the browser you use). If you used MSIE (and for some strange reason, FireFox), you got the correct web pages and they rendered well on your screen. I suspect that FireFox wasn't a target because MS was having a fun time in the EU courts over anti-competitive behavior at the time.

You left out an option.
X You have never used Hotmail or Microsoft web apps |
Another option is missing: X Poll is a waste of time
If you don't like MS products or sites, don't use them. When the new US administration gets settled, lobby them to re-open proceedings against all known monopolists and other corporate abusers. Meanwhile, let the market forces work..... |
why do we have another one of these posts?
Ya know the second I saw people were having issues I tested it for my self on slackware 12.1 with fire fox 2.0.0.16 No issues at all. However, the only thing I use this account for is messenger service. Which BTW also works perfectly with pidgin on linux. The only problem I have had with this is Pidgin on windows. MSN service with pidgin doesn't work for me at all on windows. Most of the times I can send a message out but everything coming to me is blocked. Other times I can't log on at all. EDIT: For some reason, with my firefox 2.0.0.16 I don't have these 3 parameters. general.useragent.vendor general.useragent.vendorComment general.useragent.vendorSub I never edited them either. If you don't want windows in your about:config, try deleting them completely! Either way... yes it is a step you shouldn't have to do. Honestly though... you don't need those parameters at all... unless a websight has special html to fix browserizms... in that respect you could argue that windows was trying to 'fix' known issues with fire fox and just failed like they do with everything else. |

I did have a hotmail account until I could no longer access it with Firefox. However, it was never anything more than a trash can for the junk mail I didn't want from websites I visited. It hasn't been missed, just like the everything else from Microshaft. Cheers |
Hm using Iceweasel in Debian with no changing of the useragent I have no problem accessing Hotmail.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008112309 Iceweasel/3.0.4 (Debian-3.0.4-1) |
I used to use hotmail, but since I signed up for a gmail account about a year ago I use the hotmail account for things I don't want sent to my main email address.

LOL I use Mandriva 2007, with Firefox. I have had no trouble yet getting into my hotmail account. As a matter of fact, since they did a supposed upgrade, I have had a better experience with them. Could it be that the upgrade has not reached your servers yet?????????????? It is supposed to make Hotmail more cooperative with Linux.

Hotmail is heinous. But I still use some M$ stuff. For example, in school.
|
I just use Thunderbird and Pigdin with my MS accounts with no trouble at all.
