Method of kernel .config recovery?

Hi Guys, I have very unusual problem and perhaps someone can advise me. About 2 years ago, one of the guys in the office built a small custom linux system as an mp3 player. It has frame buffer support built in and is a tidy little system.

Unfortunately, 2 years on I need to revisit the setup and add some kernel modules for different hardware. But the original kernel source was removed and the .config file along with it as well as the one that exists in /boot.

Seeing the kernel and modules are present, is there are tool that can query the loaded kernel and modules and can build a .config file from this information?

Depends how it was built really. If it was done nicely you should have a /proc/config or /proc/config.gz which is either builtin to the kernel, or in config.o on a 2.4 kernel, config.ko on a 2.6. I rebuilt a kernel recently and couldn't choose it as a module, so maybe that functionality has been removed now). Other than that i can't see it being accessible, or it wouldn't need that explicit module...
