MEPIS miro-freezes several time a second

This is getting really annoying. Anytime my computer has been running for a while (maybe an hour) doing simple things like surfing the web in firefox, using open office to write a document, and browsing my files in konqueror it starts doing this. Everything on the screen (except the cursor) freezes for a split second. If I am scrolling down a webpages, it stops scrolling, if I am typing, no characters apear on the screen during the freeze. I tried reinstalling the latest simply mepis (as of feb 12 2005), but I preserved my home directory, and I fear this is what preserved my problem. Is there somthing I can turn off to solve this? Are others having this problem?

-A refuge form Windows

P.S.
Here's my top command, if it helps. I certainly don't understand it
(I am running a 2ghz box with 1 gig of ram)

Look in your /var/log/messages file and see if you see any repetitive messages that might give you a clue.

I would expect that by watching top's output on the screen while this annoying behavior is happening, you might glimpse what's doing it, too.

My first guess is something writing to the hard drive so much it interrupts processing momentarily; that can be error messages and they may be showing up in /var/log/messages.

My second guess is something coming in over your Internet connection. Have you got a firewall in place? Does this problem happen when you have your connection DISCONNECTED?

Hope some of these suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks, I figured out what it was: Kompose.

Great program, have enjoyed using it for sometime, but I shall have to turn it off for now.
