Master Boot Record
I want to install Red Hat Linux 9.0 on my machine. I had a friend download it for me and burn it on a CD (he also installed it on a machine he has). I was talking to him on how to install it and he told me that he ran into a problem during the installation with a problem with the Master Boot Record. He said he fixed it with FDISK. I wanted to know the details of this problem and how to fix it before I even try to install Red Hat.

Welcome to LQ, linuxuser.

Without further information about what the problem you friend encountered, it is almost impossible to say what you may need to do. Sorry - a little more info needed.

My best guess would be fdisk /mbr which deletes the master boot record.. but it's nearly impossible to just randomly guess right at the problem he encountered and what he did to cure it.

? Maybe he needed to move a partion so that Linux could have the first 1024 lines to boot properly?
