Please supply some details:
  1. Make and model of laptop.
  2. Specs, including description of video card
  3. What exactly were the issues with Ubuntu?
  4. What video card option did you select when installing Mandriva?
See if you can find a file like this: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Look for a section that looks like this, and tell us what's there:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName "Dell 2001FP (Analog)"
        HorizSync 31.0 - 80.0
        VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
        Option "dpms"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName "NVIDIA Quadro4 280 NVS"
EndSection

How did you install Mandriva without the CD?
"S3" is not a complete description of the video card......

to install mandriva with out the cd you need to make iso's of the disc i put the disc in the drive in windows went to e:\distros\mandriva and run a program called winmkiso it makes 4 isos on the hard drive rebooted the machine booted from CD rom selected install it came up with no cd rom found but the gives the you the option to boot from harddisc just select the iso file

my video card according to DXDIAG in window$ is NAME: VIA/S3G UniChrome pro IGP
MANUFACTUER: VIA/S3G Graphics co,ltd

Obviously, you are not the first to put Linux with that video card:
http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...g+linux+driver

Google is your friend....

It still should work with a generic VGA or VESA driver

S3 is a driver. I have used it before. It is available in Mandriva's /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers.

Thus I would follow Pixellany's suggestion and edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in the

Section device

change the driver statement to this
Code:
Driver "s3"
If the Linux mismatches the video card driver the standard error is no screen found. One or two of the drivers in the above subdirectory will kick start the PC. At leas that is how I survive so far without the need to install a video driver myself. Not one driver out-sourced in all the Linux I installed and I believe everyone can do it too.

Actually in Mandriva, as in many Linux too, one can run the program "xorgconfig" in a root terminal to configure the Xwindows any number of times. The video section has about 100 cards to choose from. Just checked myself "s3" is one available for selection too.
