use urmpi

if you are on mandrake then don t install from source.

use the mandrake package manager who is called urmpi.

Go in the start menu-system-configura
tion and choose package manager either "install software" or remove software.

Then search for the software you need in the search box with key words. It will display it and then you just put a check mark next to it and click install. It will install everything and take care of dependencies.

Firefox is packaged in there.Mozilla too.

That way you make sure your ssystem will stay clean and stable. Plus you can uninstall at any time.

Linux is not Windows, don't expect things to be the same, but you can do everything gui nowadays, you just need to know the new names.

good luck to you

Im feeling a little like the first post in this topic and had nothing but problems with mandrake or any other linux OS. I have re installed Mandrake 8 times today because parts of it freeze.

The problem im having at the moment is this........

Some package requested cannot be installed:
gaim-1.3.1-0.mdk10.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libplds4.so)
do you agree ?

I googled for the file and found that Mozilla or Firefox uses it.
So I downloaded firefox-1.0.4.installer.tar.gz and yes I found the file.
The only problem is I'v copied the file "libplds4.so" into file:/usr/lib
and somewere else, but I still get the error.

Following what was posted here has not been any help. Yes I can start Mozilla
which is located in its own folder, ./config does not work "make" does not work and any other command.

What is going on? all I want is Gaim installed.

Is this due to only having Mandrake CD 1, 4 & 7.

Cheers
Nath

Mandrake 8 is old!!!

You should install mandrake 2005 or suse 9.1 personal. They are lightyears ahead and gaim comes pre-installed.

Of course not having the whole set of disk can be a problem yes.

I'm having many many problems with the Mandrakelinux 10.0-Community ISO Cd .
I have managed to get it burned to CD fairly easily with Nero, and I had to create a floppy to get the computer it to boot from the CD.
the O/S installed easily enough.... but now I cant install programs ,...mostly dependency problems, But the big problem is I cant find the dependency files, and when I do find some, I cant seem to get the dependent file to install either.
I'm trying to get rid of XP but this Mandrake is being very difficult.
My understanding is that this was supposed to be easy to work with ...so...what am I doing wrong?
I assume this is user error.....Firefox won't install properly for me and neither will Gaim.

Firefox ...I click on the installer file and it starts Firefox but after I close it it wont restart unless I re-install it.

Gaim... i cant get past a file called libplds4.so
This is the message i get:

Some package requested cannot be installed:
gaim-0.82.1-0mdk10.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libplds4.so)
do you agree ?

Is it just too soon to switch to linux?
Is it just not developed enough yet?

Any help to get started would be appreciated a video tutorial for Mandrake 10.0 would be great . The tutorials I've been reading haven't helped me much because I'm not familiar with the new terminology and file system.

Am i expecting too much from linux?
Should I just go back to XP?
:SIGH:...Help! 8 days into this and I'm still drowning...

Thanks,
P.N.Gwin
Ok, I dont know why noone told this guy the simple solution, Its easy.
Forefox or Mozilla whateva you want to call it, I downloaded "firefox-1.0.4.installer.tar.gz" right clicked on it > actions > Extract here.
This created a New folder called "firefox-installer" I opened up the folder and double clicked on "firefox-installer" which brought up the installer wizard. I moved the folder to my home dirctory were it wouldnt be clogging up my desktop. And to start Mozilla I clicked on "firefox" works every time.

Ok for the Gaim solution, I downloaded "gaim-1.3.1-0.mdk10.0.i586.rpm"
Like yourself I got that stupid error about missing a file. Want to know the solution? Its so simple....... Goto this website "http://www.urpmi-addmedia.org/index2.php" Follow all the steps and when you get down to the 3rd step copy and paste what it says into console. DONE!

Now I have Gaim working. Now why cant anyone answer that?

you can download the RPM for firefox from here
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i586.rpm.html

just be aware it will be a reasonably big file
so this might not be an option if you dont have broadband

this is a good site to bookmark
http://rpm.pbone.net/
you can also get libdvdcss
which will help play your encrypted DVDs

just download the PRM to a folder in your home directory
and with the media manager in MCC
add that folder
and then use "install software" in MCC to add the RPM
it really is simple

hope this helps
