I would like to make a .edu or .org site with linux. Lets say I want to make http://linux.edu, how would I do that? Is there any way to avoid paying 25 dollars a year using some kind of www.com internet provider?
First of all you cannot get an .edu extension. Its for education only, but you can get .com .net or .org. I have one domain name at Network solutions and 3 more at www.godaddy.com . I am hosting my own domain names but you can host them through any company on the net. Or you can buy a service from godaddy to forward all the trafic to a free hosted website like geocities.
In regards to licensing a domain, do a search on cheap domains. You can find companies that handle registration for $12 a year and maybe less. I don't think you'll find any ones that will do it for free.
Godaddy was the cheapest i found until now. Thats why i pointed him to their site. They charge $8.95 for a year, and if you signup for like 10 years, it comes to $6.95 a year. But in order to do the dns lookup thingy, you have to have a nameserver that you register with Network Solutions.
Hey, I checked out godaddy and it looked really good. There was no contact us thing, and I was wondering whether I get to make the actual html or there is a netscape composer kind of thing. I would much rather make the html.
Godaddy does not host your websites. They just register the domain name you want. You have to find another hosting company to host your websites. Or i just found out that netzero does everything for free, but the domain name you want is not going to be yours. You will not own your own domain name. It will be registered under Netzero and if the site grows, you will have to buy it from them (which i dont recomend).
