making box b a clone of box a

I have two identical boxes - identical in every respect. Box a is now set up and has about 40 users set up. I want Box b to be *exactly* the same as a. I put the hdd from b into a and booted using Knoppix and tried a dd copy but it took ages (the drives are 30gb) and then froze. Is dd the solution or could I set up the partitions on the hdd from b and copy all the files over?? Is there another solution to dd??

Just doing a google throws up g4u (ghost for unix):

I never used it, but maybe it is overkill for you with just one copy to make. I would just put both drives on one machine, partition the drives identically and copy files over. Return drive and run lilo to set up bootloader.

With corresponding partitions on /mnt1 and /mnt2 you should be able to copy with (as root)

# cd /mnt1 ; tar cf - * | ( cd /mnt2 ; tar xvf - )

This just tar's everything into one long file and untar's in a different dir on the other side of the pipe.

I don't know about dd. I would think you could dd a partition, but why bother if it is mainly empty?

You could try partimage.
There is a system rescue cd at
Check to see that the partimage shipped are stable first. The cd it self is in a early state.
