Making a USB recovery drive for Linux
 

Hello all,

I have been playing around with kernel 3.6.1 and have left myself in various unbootable states. Luckily my old partition is still in grub2 and have been able to revert to that.

I would like to create a bootable USB that would have a modern kernel (3.5.x or 3.6.x) that I could install some recovery tools on. Anyone done this? Is there one out there?

Recently I setup Puppy Linux based on Slack 13.37. Studio-13.37

115Mb, and has all the disktools, grub(v.1) editing tools and networking and much much more.

I have upgraded to 3.6.2 without any problems (thus far!). I found a good rescue USB image that allows me to boot the kernel off the USB and mount your file systems off the hard drive. This makes it very easy to fix a broken GRUB2 or kernel installed on your hard drive.

It is at http://www.sysresccd.org/. I recommend you download it, and keep it on a spare USB drive in a drawer somewhere in case you corrupt your kernel or GRUB2.
