Making a New Linux Distribution; Wanted Thoughts

Hey.

I'm making a new Linux distribution. It is CentOS-based.

I wanted to know what programs should be included.

The focus of the distribution will be desktop publishing, audio, and video.

It will also feature a nice WINE implementation, so freeware and open source windows software is also game.

That is quite an ambitious task. I question the use of CentOS as a base though since it is primarily used for servers. Are you planning on deploying to a classroom or something?

Distrowatch released this announcement for ArtistX and it at least might give you ideas on the programs to include or exclude. Good luck with the project.

Why not start from scratch? Changing the logo is hardly "making a distribution".

I don't think he's that ambitious. His goal seems to be a customized niche ("The focus of the distribution will be desktop publishing, audio, and video"). It could be Distro X with just a different set of packages. Or it could just be a script that installs the packages he considers useful for this purpose. But I think he wants to be able to do a complete system install once, and everything is there for this special purpose.

A whole new base distro ... what would we need that for (I'm not saying there isn't an answer ... just trying to get one from you to form a basis to discuss)?

Oh, and maybe it will include my new boot loader :)
