Making a debian based distro

Hi I was wondering if you could tell me how to create a debian based distro, point me to anarticle or tell me what I have to do, THNX in advance.

ctkroeker 10-15-2005 09:54 AM

You mean "install" it? I'd say first try LFS, then try remastering Debian or maybe Knoppix, and "then" see if you still want to make a distro.

rmckayfleming 10-15-2005 10:04 AM

no what I want to do is create a distro of my own that I can give away so other people can try my personalized distro, having my software packages I pick and the default theme and all of that, is there anyway to create your own distro based on debian and put it on a cd to install it. I know that Ubuntu did that so I want to do that.

if you have to ask how to do it you probably aren't ready to _actually_ do it.

Do some google search on how to customize ( remaster ) a distro. Knoppix is good option to get going.

Making a distro is not a trivial task :-). If it was an easy task, you would already had an answer or wouldn't even have asked the question... Like php said "if you have to ask how to do it you probably aren't ready to _actually_ do it."

You will have to use search engines and read a lot... where?... on the internet of course.

How much experience do you have with Linux? Are you good with working in the terminal? If not, start with Linux for Dummies (make sure it's the 2005 version). It's a great book.

And yeah, if you have to ask, you're most likley not ready. ;)

Just got a book on UNIX command line (terminal) and it is good for all UNIX-based operating systems, still can you point me towards a distro that has an article on how they did it, a distro based on debian?

Hello, anybody?

phil.d.g 10-16-2005 04:04 PM

Hello

...Did you actually read the above posts?
Why don't you spend a few minutes with google and do a bit of research about the subject. If you can't be bothered to do that and resort to asking someone to find a "how-to" for you then I can't see how you're prepared to put the time and effort into creating a distribution and maintaining it.

rmckayfleming 10-16-2005 06:59 PM

Well sorry, I just couldn't find any articles with google

mrcheeks 10-16-2005 07:43 PM

keep on looking and good luck. If you stop here what will you do when you start making your distro? :-)

rmckayfleming 10-17-2005 06:19 AM

Well, why don't you help me, make a distro. I want to make a small fast OS, so you can easily have room to program and expand your application base, really I just want to have the most space I can scratch out of my 10GB hard drive. Small and fast, who wants to help?

theYinYeti 10-17-2005 06:48 AM

Why not using Damn Small Linux? It is small, fast, and based on Knoppix, which is based on Debian. So you can use Debian packages in Damn Small Linux.

Yves.

No, what I want to do is create a Debian based distro, not install one, because I want my own, something I can be proud of. Ok?
