make the permanent change to /etc/sysctl.conf

I am trying to install Oracle on Linux Redhat Advance Server 2.1, one of the requirement for Oracle to run on Linux is setting the shared memory on the o/s. any way, I want to make the permanent change on /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax. So I went into /etc/sysctl.conf I edit the file and add the line as follow:

echo "kernel.shmmax=2147483648" >> /etc/sysctl.conf

and save this file, from what I undersand, this value will be changed permanently and every time when I reboot the server I should expect this value, but after the reboot, the old value still there and it seemd like the change is never been made.

any advises how I change this value permanently????

thanks,

Try putting spaces around the equal sign. I know, you shouldn't need to, but this is a RedHat-specific thing and who knows how they're parsing that file. My /etc/sysctl.conf has spaces on both sides of all the equal signs, and my values get set.
