Make something bootable in VM

Hi,

I have downloaded the following file http://ftp.tandberg.com/pub/software...1x7_1_0.tar.gz

Apparently this is a complete working image which is currently and appliance based device. I would like to convert this to a virtual machine but im not sure how to go about it. I have VM Player which I have used a live CD to create a EX2 and EXT3 bootable partition and then extracted the file but it does not boot.. If some one is able to provide any assistance that would be great.
