make install_module

After a successfull bzImage and make install_modue i reboot the system into the new kernel. Howevet the system searches for the new modules in /lib/modules/2.4.20-18.9.2atrpmscustom. Unfortunately there is no such directory because i named the kerenel 2.4.20-18.9.2atrpms-APTIVA-MASQ. So thats the directory in lib/modules containing the klm's for my new kernel. The system searches fruitlessly for these modules and of coarse is unable to run pppoe nat'ing and a wealth of other essential capabilities.
How do i tell the boot process where to search for the needed modules?
