Make GRUB rescan all drives

I made the sad mistake of completely replacing my menu.lst when updating the kernel, and now only one OS is in there (Ubuntu Studio) The profuse amounts of googling I have done say that, in theory, update-grub should scan all drives but that doesn't seem to be happening. I have three hard drives - one with Ubuntu Studio (working), one with Kubuntu (not working), and one with Windows XP (also not working).

Grub doesn't care what is on the drives - menu.lst is the users responsibility. Detecting installed O/Ss is done by the (distro) installer, not grub itself.
Adding stanzas to menu.lst is relatively trivial.
