MAKE BZIMAGE doesn't work when i try to compile and install new linux kernel
whenever i'm in the process of compiling and installing a new kernel in ubuntu lucid lynx i get an error message when i get to the make bzimage part is there some sort of program that i needed to install first or is there an alternative to doing this
You should have the following packages to successfully build the kernel:
the source itself: linux-source
for building: build-essential, kernel-package, gcc
for 'make menuconfig': libncurses5, libncurses5-dev
Alternatives to 'make bzimage':
'make-kpkg kernel_image'
This compiles the kernel and creates an installable .deb-Package you can install with 'dpkg -i /usr/src/kernel-image-*.deb'
well lets say that i want to install it on an operating system where the package manager files won't execute correctly and the software repositories won't load how do i install it if i can't use those features
the ubuntu software repositories aren't working right now i don't know why but i think i'm going to have to install it from source unless theres an apt-get command to install it

i have been reading around several linux sites on the internet and most of the time making the bz image isn't reall necessary and that the kernel can live without it, is this true with debian and ubuntu based systems
i tried to install the kernel in zenwalk under virtualbox to test it out and it worked i restarted the virtual machine and opened a terminal and ran
Code:
uname -r
and it came up as 2.6.34.1 its the current kernel version i was planning on using if only it would work with ubuntu
