make a USB drive bootable

howto make a USB drive bootable and put an iso image ?
I'd like to boot with USB and install a new OS.

basically, you format the drive with two partitions, one with a bootdisk image, and the other with the iso. when I did this for fedora/centos, I had to manually point the MBR to the boot partition, but otherwise it worked fine.
