Question Make a customized OS

OK, this might be huge request for a newbie like me, but I just want to know how can I customize my own OS?

What I'm trying to say is if I don't want to download Fedora or SuSe etc. and want to have just KDE or Gnome plus a FEW other programs that I really NEED, what do I have to do?

I found this article that talks about kernle compilation. Is this what I have to do? If yes, I still have to wait a LOOONG time until I can figure out what this article is saying!

Anyway, thanks.

You could look into http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/news.html
or maybe remastering a livecd like knoppix or slax.
