mail question

Could someone please explain something for me?

I know that a users mail is stored in /var/spool/username

But I also notice that sometimes I have mail in my Mailbox /home/username/mbox why is this, what purpose does this serve?

All help is appreciated...

/var/spool/mail/user or /var/spool/user is where the system ( more specifically the Mail Delivery Agent that acts on its behalf) deposits the user's mail. Your mail user agent ( pine, mutt etc ) read them from there and usually deposit the ones you keep in a directory under your home. Typically ~/mbox.
