mail is not delivered thru the mail command


i have RH7.2 on my system. its a single system witout any networking. wheneve i try to send a mail to another user account as the root or as any other user the mail is not sent
i invoke the mail comd as follows

$mail user1

it then asks for the subject etc., but when i press Ctrl-d inorder to send the message the following error message is diplayed on the terminal

Subject: Cc: /etc/sendmail.cf: line 85: fileclass: cannot open '/etc/mail/local-host-names': World writable directory
/etc/sendmail.cf: line 510: fileclass: cannot open '/etc/mail/trusted-users': World writable directory

i cannot understand what is the problem. i am a newbie so please help me

Not sure, but maybe the problem is that sendmail does not trust any files in your /etc/mail directory, as that directory is world-writable.

If so, you can try:

chmod o-w /etc/mail

to correct the permissions.
