Lvm

can anybody let me know the difference between a LVM partition and normal Ext3 partition. Does LVM service should be running to detect a LVM partition?

Thanks,
Sudheendra

LVM = Logical Volume Manager

In short terms, LVM allows you to span a partition across multiple hard drives. It also allows for easier steps to resize partitions.

ext3 = Is the type of filesystem a partition or slice is partitioned in. You usually cannot resize it or span it across multiple drives as one partition with native tools, only with 3rd party type tools, etc.
